How to Wash a Wig

  • Remove the wig.
  • Brush the wig gently with a wig brush, getting rid of all tangles.
  • Fill a sink with cold water.
  • Add a capful (about 1 tbsp.) of wig shampoo.
  • Place the wig in soapy water and swish it around with your fingers for a minute or two.
  • Use a soft toothbrush to remove any makeup stains. Use a paste of baking soda and shampoo on stubborn makeup stains.
  • Let the wig soak in the sink for about five minutes.
  • Drain the soapy water out and refill the sink with clean, cool water.
  • Rinse the wig until all the shampoo is removed. You may have to change the water a few times.
  • Gently blot the excess water with a dry towel. Do not wring the wig out.
  • Let the wig air-dry on a wig stand, or turn it inside out and lay flat to dry.
  • Spray on a wig conditioner and style your wig after it has dried.

How to Apply Hair Extensions

  1. Make sure you have everything you need. A comb with a pick, your extensions, hair bobble/ clip and maybe hairspray.
  2. Section the part of your hair just before you want to put the extensions in. Get a hair bobble and tie it up. If it's easier work your way to the front.
  3. Slide the clip in the part you want the hair to be, then pop towards your head. Repeat with the rest of the clips.
  4. Once you have finished that, spray some hairspray over then get your top layers and brush them *not too hard because otherwise they'll pull the extensions out*.

How to Care for your Human Hair Extensions

Washing your hair extensions is easy and you should always make sure to keep them clean. After doing activities that would make you sweat, you must wash your hair as soon as you are home. It would build up dirt as well as sweat and you may have a hard time dealing with hair tangles. If you are have hair tangles, remove it first before washing your hair. Make sure that you do not bend over when washing. Start from the root up to the tip. There are also nice shampoos that you can use which are specially made for hair extensions.

Just like your normal hair, you hair extension can also be made in a style that you desire. When styling your hair extension, see to it that you only use a brush with soft bristles. Unlike washing, you should start brushing your hair from the tip and work your way up to the top. Always brush the hair gently to avoid tangles. Make sure that you also brush your hair extension at least twice a day. It is not advisable to use curling irons or hair dryers in hair extensions unless needed. The more often you use these kinds of hair styling equipments, the shorter will be the lifespan of your hair extension. Besides, it also contributes to hair damage and hair fall as well. Just allocate enough time and let it dry naturally.

At the end of the day, you would probably want to wash your hair to get rid of the dirt you got from all the activities that you had. Make use of the washing tips that was mentioned before. Afterwards, let it dry again naturally. See to it that you do not sleep with your hair wet so that the extensions will not be damaged.

Good hair products should be used in caring for your extensions. Rather than using conditioners that you would wash off before you leave the shower, use the leave-on conditioner instead. This would help you achieve a soft and bouncy hair all day long. However, you must put only ample amount of hair conditioner. The same goes for all the products that you would put in your hair. Too much hair product may cause hair tangle. Aside from that, you must not also use hair products that use alcohol as its main ingredient. This would result to dry and frizzy hair not only on the extension but to you natural hair at the same time.

And while you have extensions to make you look fabulous, do not attempt to do any hair treatments on your own. This includes hair coloring or perm. If you want to have hair treatments, let the stylist who extended your hair do it for you.

What is the difference between a weave and hair extensions?

Weave and Hair Extension

When you start looking into getting hair extensions, you may run into salons that offer weaves.

A weave is when all of your natural hair is braided. Then the stylists will take a hook and needle and sew in the hair extensions into the braid.

The service can be a little pricey--around $500 or more--depending on the quality of extensions that you get.

There are disadvantages to getting a weave. Typically a weave will last anywhere from 6-10 weeks, usually a little bit less than other types of extensions. Also, if you don't go with an experienced hair stylist, your braids could be done to tight on your head. Overly tight braids can contribute to scalp soreness, itchiness and even permanent hair loss. The stress of the hair pulling too much on the scalp can cause the natural hair to fall out at the roots.

If you have ever worn your hair in braids, it can take some getting used to. I know that I experience itchiness even when the braids are not too tight.

But the weave is viable option for getting long hair and one big advantage is that it does not use any sort of chemical or adhesive--which in the end will be better for your hair.
