There are many types of human hair used for hair extensions. Do not skimp on this step of your purchase. When poor hair quality is used, your hair extension can become tangled, snarl, dry, and brittle. When it comes to hair there are two basic types: human hair (which has many different types) and synthetic hair.
The Human Hair Structure of the Cuticle: Hair is made of different layers. The outer layer, called the "cuticle", is made up of overlapping layers of long cells. They lie on the surface aligned in the same direction. The cuticle locks in essential moisture and protects the hair against outside elements. Much of the shine in hair is when the cuticle laying flat and closed. The light reflects from its glossy surface and pigment which produces the healthy shine and finish. Without cuticle hair would appear dull, lifeless, and brittle.
European Human Hair does not only come from Europe. This hair is relatively thin and has an oval cross-section. This is a popular hair type for a human hair extension and what we recommend for strand by strand cold fusion. It simply means it has a different hair structure. Indian, Asian, and African hair is usually sold raw "or virgin" and unprocessed.
Remy Hair is a common name you will hear when you shop around for hair extensions. It is made from 100% Human hair, and simply means they take the finest and most beautiful human hair in the world, process it so all cuticles are in the same direction. This makes the hair shinny and helps it not to tangle.
Indian Hair: is usually donated by the temple. Before a female marries, she will cut off her and donate it to the temple as a gift for good luck and prosperity for her and her husband. The structure of this hair is similar to European hair. In general this hair type is of a very high quality. With all the cuticles present and in the same direction this hair is one of the best hair types available for use in a human hair extension, but is usually applied with a keratin based bond that is heated and wrapped around the hair.
Asian Hair is thicker than European hair and has a round cross-section. Most of Chinese hair is used for human hair extensions. It is dark black, and must be prepared and made thinner and lighter by putting them in an acid bath than re-colored. This hair is less expensive.
Synthetic Hair is man-made fiber and is the most inexpensive. It looks different than human hair and should be mixed with it because it moves differently. It comes in a large variety of colors and fibers. It cannot be heated with metal tools like curling irons, and has to be styled with a garment steamer so it does not melt. It is a great choice for a temporary application and for fun.
